HOW TO STAY POSITIVE IN A NEGATIVE WORLD

How to Stay Positive in a Negative World

We are bombarded by negative messages. Television, radio, newsprint, and now via the internet as well. With all of the negativity that abounds, how can we stay positive? Is it even possible? And if we strive to keep a positive outlook, are we just seeing the world through the proverbial rose-colored glasses?

There IS a difference between blindly ignoring the reality of the world, and that of seeing reality and still looking for the positives. The world can be a cruel place. There is crime, unhappiness and disease. The world can be a wonderful place. There is love, compassion and joy. Both scenarios exist and will affect us in our lives. However...which do we want to have as the prominent emphasis in our lives? Quite honestly, attitude is a major factor. The difference between optimism and pessimism. Is the glass half-full or half-empty?

I cannot tell you that it is easy to remain positive at all times. Some disciplines of metaphysical thought seem to suggest that if we are a truly enlightened and spiritual person, we will and are able to welcome all events to our lives, viewing them as a positive. A learning experience. Intellectually, that can be easy to grasp. But what happens when a "learning experience" hits home and comes crashing into our lives?

We might be studying and moving forward on an enlightened spiritual path. However, the majority of us still maintain "everyday" lives. We may be on the path, but that path is still sitting somewhere on planet Earth - New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, New York City - wherever! When a major negative happens, perhaps a death of a loved one, or being victimized by a crime such as rape or murder, being "enlightened" is difficult. It is not that easy to view those experiences as just another learning experience.

Sounds like I'm being a bit negative, doesn't it? What I'm trying to point out is that we are not perfect. Most of us cannot maintain a "perfect" positive outlook ALL the time. We are human! Negative things can and will probably happen to us at some point. The glass is half-empty. What has been lost? But by the same token, POSITIVE things can and will happen to us at some point as well. A positive person will strive to emphasize the good and those positives. The glass is half-full. Maybe it's not full...yet. It just might be on it's way to becoming full!

It's right back to attitude....and what we allow to be the major emphasis in our lives. By having a positive outlook, we are not ignoring reality or denying our emotions. When we hurt, or unhappy with events, we should allow ourselves to admit it. Negativity is being caught and trapped in a rut and dwelling on those hurts. Being positive means allowing us that time to heal and then moving forward.

If we really think about it, some of the "crappy" things that have happened to us in the past has put us in a position to later receive wonderful things. At the time it happened we sure didn't feel happy about it! Now, with the passage of time, we can accept those things as having a positive outcome.

Don't beat yourself up if you are not "enlightened" enough to be positive and happy all the time. That is unrealistic for most of us. The important thing is to strive to have a perspective of positivity rather than negativity.

By having a generally positive outlook, I believe we are more likely to FIND positives and attract positives to us. One, because we attract like energy, therefore if we put out positive thoughts, we tend to attract positives. Two, because we'll notice and be aware and ready to receive!

May the sum of any negatives always be outweighed by all the positives in your life.....
